Successful completion: New HKI Biotech Centre in Jena!
We are very pleased about the realisation of the HKI Biotech Centre in Jena!
The Beutenberg Campus in Jena has been expanded by a new research and laboratory building for the Hans Knöll Institute (HKI). The HKI Biotech Centre on this research site has now been completed. The four-storey research building comprises additional state-of-the-art laboratory spaces for the Natural Product Research and Infection Biology Departments of the Leibniz Institute.
Since its foundation in 1991, the Hans Knöll Institute for Natural Product Research has grown steadily and is today a modern research institute with more than 420 employees. Its staff is dedicated to important research topics such as infection biology and new natural products from microorganisms that can be used to combat infections.
As a result of HKI’s growing scientific reputation and related growth, the existing building capacities were no longer sufficient. The HKI Biotech Centre complements the existing buildings with additional research facilities where 90 employees will work in the future.
The central design principles both ensure the integration of the new building into the architectural ensemble and offer the high functional and spatial qualities required for high-tech biotechnology research. One design principle is the consistent pooling of important functions and the resulting spatial arrangement of laboratories, service rooms and offices in three building sections. The arrangement of the work spaces and offices on the façade fills them with natural daylight and creates a pleasant working atmosphere.
