The topping-out ceremony for the new Interdisciplinary Tumour Center (ITC) in Freiburg, designed by Nickl & Partner Architekten, took place on 22 July 2016. Following the welcome by Karl-Heinz Bühler, Senior Construction Director / Director of the Freiburg branch of the State Property and Construction Department, additional speeches of congratulation and thanks were delivered by Prof. Jörg Rüdiger Siewert, Director of the Freiburg University Hospital and Dr Martin Haag, Chief Building Official for the city of Freiburg. After his address, Prof. Hans Nickl offered all participants a tour of the shell of the new building.
Upon completion, the scattered facilities of oncology, haematology and the Comprehensive Cancer Center will be combined in the new building. This will result in benefits for the staff and, most importantly, for the patients. All functions that are important for the therapy decision will be brought together. The top floor of the new Tumour Center will be used primarily as a high-tech area for bone marrow therapy.
The city of Freiburg benefits enormously from the university hospital, according to Mr Haag, and has been involved in the planning from the very beginning. The Interdisciplinary Tumour Center marks the starting point of the multi-million-euro “University Hospital 21” master plan, which anticipates construction of a total of six pavilions.
Siewert therefore emphasised the symbolic significance of the ITC within the overall context of the project: “Our hospital is growing and expanding. We’re pushing back the frontiers.”
