We are happy to have won the 1st prize in the competition for the extension to the LWL Clinic in Marsberg!
On the former monastery grounds of Marsberg, two new psychiatric-psychotherapeutic facilities are to be built, which will formally complement the existing building of the LWL Clinic. Besides a sports hall, a new adult psychiatric ward and a child and adolescent psychiatric ward will be added to the existing structure.
Our design provides for the extension buildings to be integrated into the green park area of the hospital. The special quality of the park landscape is emphasised by a targeted composition of the building volumes. The trapezoidal shape of the two new buildings sets them apart from the central existing structure, but when viewed as a whole they contribute to a balanced ensemble of buildings.
The additional design of a central agora as a forecourt in front of the main entrance of the existing building redefines important lines of movement and access and emphasises the impressive façade of the existing building. A linear access axis emerges from the agora, linking the existing building with the two extensions and supporting important visual relationships to the entrance gate and the sports hall. To preserve the green park landscape as much as possible, the sports hall will be located in the inner courtyard of the existing building.
The jury praised the sensitive treatment of the listed building and the harmonious integration of the extensions into the park landscape. The design was also praised for its graceful formulation of the building volumes, the respectful design of the green spaces and the well-proportioned urban concept of the agora.
We congratulate our team on this outstanding achievement!
