This new build represented the first phase of the expansion of Tübingen University’s Oberer Schnarrenberg campus to include medical institutes and teaching and research facilities. It is designed to accommodate around 300 researchers, and includes highly specialised laboratories and animal housing. The competition-winning design consists of a mini-campus set amid the existing greenery and designed to encourage communication between researchers. It stands almost perpendicular to the steep, sloping site, its base seemingly pushing its way out of the ground. The lower levels are bedded into the slope, providing secure indoor and outdoor accommodation for research animals.
