In crisis – hit areas the rapid mobilization of medical care is vitally important. Mobile health stations of the type that are currently used in crisis areas consist of large tent encampments designed to be in service for three to four months. Due to their temporary construction, however, they are generally no longer fit for their purpose after this period and are dismantled. Because even basic healthcare cannot be taken for granted in most developing and emerging nations – and because of the absence of necessary infrastructure – national and international aid organizations have been working for years on ways of meeting the enormous need for cheaper and more efficient medical provision. A number of projects have been concerned with finding different strategies for developing facilities of this kind. To meet the needs of patients in crisis – hit areas or areas with insufficient medical provision, mobile systems must be capable of being put into action quickly, and, above all, they must be robust. This is essential in creating a sustainable system of healthcare Provision that is capable of being developed further. This situation imposes high demands on these constructions: they must be resilient and fully hygienic, capable of being deployed flexibly, both easy to set up and durable, but also fully functional without depending on local energy and water supplies, and they must offer the best possible conditions for the staff and patients housed within them. The basic idea behind the system of the Health Box that we developed is a modular construction system for a primary and secondary healthcare facility that can be deployed in developing and emerging nations and can be adapted to the specific conditions of disaster areas. It is a prefabricated medical department that uses extendable modules constructed from standard ISO shipping containers to enable basic medical provision in rural and isolated areas. At the heart of each module we have positioned a unique high – tech wall, which ensures the presence of the essential technological infrastructure, including conduit systems for medical gases, light, air conditioning and an air purification system – factors necessary in providing a high standard of healthcare. This facility is suitable for all diagnostic and therapeutic fields of medicine, including preventative medicine, emergency care, intensive care, operating rooms and obstetrics.
The Health Box has an exceptionally mobile, flexible and modular construction and can be expanded to form a complete hospital with outpatient and inpatient care. It is also independent in terms of power and of water supply. It is easy to transport, and, as it is largely prefabricated, easy to assemble. Local materials and local construction labor could be used to create the necessary conditions for the Setting up of the facility. Our Health Box makes efficient use of financial resources to deliver high – end health care to areas with an acute lack of healthcare provision, thereby ensuring high standard longterm provision that takes advantage of the potential of digital and internet – based medicine.
