Based on the masterplan developed by Nickl & Partner, the Body & Brain Institute Münster (BBIM) and the Medical Research Centre (MedForCe) at Münster University Hospital form a forward-looking campus for medical research. The ensemble integrates into the hospital’s historic fabric, while developing it into a contemporary campus for research, teaching and healthcare.
BBIM and MedForCe are closely connected both spatially and functionally. A central circulation spine links the research buildings and forms the communicative heart of the campus. Flexible laboratory clusters, offices and meeting rooms, together with highly specialised research areas, create a variety of working environments and encourage exchange between scientific disciplines. While MedForCe brings together institutes for infection medicine as well as extensive research facilities, BBIM is dedicated to the integrated study of the brain, nervous system and body.
The shared architectural approach is also reflected in the façades. Brick at ground-floor level references the materiality of the historic hospital buildings, while large areas of glazing and vertical façade fins give the new buildings a light and clearly articulated appearance above. The result is a research ensemble that brings together existing and new architecture while giving the Research Campus East a distinct identity.
