Hans and Christine Nickl Foundation

Architecture as social responsibility

The Hans and Christine Nickl Foundation was established in 2007 based on a clear conviction: health is not a luxury good, but the foundation of a sustainable society. There is far too little urgent research into architecture and its impact on people.

Prof. Christine Nickl-Weller and Prof. Hans Nickl bring together decades of experience in healthcare architecture and research through the foundation.

Together with Hieronimus and Magnus Nickl, they pursue the goal of not only preserving knowledge, but actively sharing and advancing it.

The foundation sees itself as a bridge between science, practice, and education. It connects experts worldwide and develops solutions for regions shaped by remoteness, limited resources, or structural disadvantage.

A particular focus is placed on promoting young talent. Since 2020, the foundation has presented the international Architecture for Health Student Award, which recognises outstanding theses in the fields of architecture, urban planning and landscape design. The competition is sponsored by the European Network Architecture for Health (ENAH) and, since 2022, has been supplemented by a special prize from Charité.
