Renovation and expansion of the West Clinic in Augsburg

With the westward expansion, Augsburg Hospital gained a new, high-performance functional building that further develops the campus into a modern health center. The structural expansion is being carried out on the west side of the hospital. The horizontal connection to the hospital is ensured by continuing the existing main corridor on the 2nd basement level, 1st basement level, ground floor, 1st floor, and 3rd floor.
At the same time, analogous to the existing buildings north and south of the main corridor, the individual functional areas will be located at the central contact points. In the extension area, two atriums on each side will be cut into the building from the ground floor to the third floor, ensuring that the core zone is well lit. The structure will be integrated into the new “appearance” of the clinic (after the general renovation).
Access to the new building is via the existing main entrance. In addition to the existing main entrance, which provides access to the new building for visitors, ambulatory patients, and staff, an access point for “bedridden” patients visiting the day clinic will be created on the west side of the ground floor. The access point comprises a 16 m wide bridge suitable for vehicles and a turning loop with a short-stay parking zone in front of the entrance area.
This ensures that patients with walking difficulties can be driven right up to the entrance. Patients who are unable to walk can be driven up in a seated or lying position and then transferred to the respective day clinics using suitable means of transport (wheelchairs, stretchers).
