The Comprehensive Heart Failure Center shell structure is complete. The topping-out ceremony on 12 June 2015 rang in a new era for research.

Mayor Christian Schuchardt was joined by representatives from medicine and politics, including Gerhard Eck, State Secretary of Bavaria, Prof. Dr Dr Alfred Forchel, President of Würzburg University, Prof. Dr Christoph Reiners, Medical Director of Würzburg University, Joachim Fuchs, Director of the State Construction Authority, Würzburg office and Prof. Dr Georg Ertl, DZHI spokesperson.

The Comprehensive Heart Failure Center was established in 2010 as a research and treatment centre with financial assistance for education and research. The new construction project is financed by the state of Bavaria, the German federal government and Würzburg University Hospital. The Nickl & Partner Architekten design develops a new, prestigious face for this highly specialized centre. The volume and appearance of the new building not only references the hospital, but also fits the high-rise residential development on the Schwarzenberg hill.

The new Comprehensive Heart Failure Centre brings diverse disciplines in heart failure research together under one roof. Consequently, it must exhibit technical capability and combine varied spatial demands in one building. While the tower combines all the laboratories and office uses, the plinth houses the test subject area, animal husbandry and molecular imaging. The open-sided storey, which creates a glazed entrance and public area between the plinth and tower, contains all foyer and lobby uses as well as the lecture hall and training facilities. The test subject and patient area is at the lower foyer and is connected to ambulance arrivals. It stretches along the long hillside façade and has a view of the wooded habitat areas. Molecular imaging and animal husbandry are set back into the slope.
