Thuringia’s Environment Minister, Anja Siegesmund, honoured the best projects in the 2016 Thuringia Energy Efficiency Prize on 9 November. A six-member jury of experts had previously selected four prize winners and three honourable mentions from 27 submitted entries.

We congratulate the HKL Ingenieurgesellschaft design office and managing partner Martin Deutschmann! The firm received an award in the energy efficiency prize for the use of a smart heating and cooling circuit in our joint University of Erfurt Communication and Information Centre project.

HKL Ingenieurgesellschaft developed an energy concept for this project that optimises refrigeration in terms of energy demand and enables synergies between heating and cooling operation. The building, which houses two conference halls and the computing centre with an additional four PC rooms, each with 25 workplaces, requires constant air-conditioning. The innovative centrepiece of this system is a 400 m³ ice storage system that generates and stores energy from natural heat that is released for space heating or cooling when needed.
